Earth's 'oldest thing ever' gets viewing: "Zircon crystal sample believed to date back 4.4 billion years"

But what does it mean really to be the "oldest thing ever"? Perhaps they mean, the oldest thing yet found that hasn't changed its form or composition. Every piece of rock has been around, possibly as molten lava or something, since the beginning of the earth -- unless it came from a meteorite.
