March of the Penguins: The creator of the film March of the Penguins has lashed out againts conservative groups that cited his film as support for intelligent design and the value of monogamy.

National Design Awards 2005, which were recently announced, featured the Blur Buidling in the architecture category. "The pavilion at the base of lake Neuchatel in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland, is made of filtered lake water shot as a fine mist through 13,000 fog nozzles creating an artificial cloud that measures 300 feet wide by 200 feet deep by 65 feet high."

Also featured Burt Rutan, designer of SpaceShipOne.

Clever Whales Bait Gulls With Fish: "First, the young whale spit regurgitated fish onto the surface of the water, then sank below the water and waited.

If a hungry gull landed on the water, the whale would surge up to the surface, sometimes catching a free meal of his own."

Ogle Earth: Google helps discover Roman villa: "Luca Mori, an Italian systems analyst who blogs, used Google Earth Maps to rummage around his village of Sorbolo, near Parma (near Bologna). He thought he saw 'anomalies.' For the duration of August he measured them, explored them, asked around, and eventually called up professional archeologists.

As they do in Italy, the archeologists had a look, only to find a previously undiscovered Roman villa!"

Cyborg cells sense humidity: "Living bacteria have been incorporated into an electronic circuit to produce a sensitive humidity gauge.

The device unites microbe and machine, taking advantage of the properties of both to make for a supersensitive sensor.

"As far as we know, this is the first report of using microorganisms to make an electronic device," says Ravi Saraf, a chemist from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, who developed the 'cellborg' with his student Vikas Berry."
